Event Horizon
Event Horizon is a light sculpture created by Aidan Lincoln & Young-min Choi which is inspired by the phenomena that takes place near the event horizon of a black hole.
The center of the Event Horizon emits rings of light creating the illusion that you are moving through three dimensional space. Eight disparate circles move around the center of the event horizon each following their own set of rules. When the circles come into close proximity or collide with one another they warp each other’s color space. Because the parameters that factor into the movement and color of each circle contain their own randomness, the scenes displayed are always unique (when running the generative patch). The sculpture that is displayed is running a 5 minute recording of this generative patch in order to make it a standalone piece that can just be mounted and plugged into the wall.
The sculpture is 11x16x3 in and can be displayed on a pedestal or mounted to the wall with french cleats. The sculpture consists of 3 LED matrix panels, each 32x64 leds for a total of over 6,000 leds which are positioned beneath a three dimensional box made from lenticular lens. The lenticules of the lens stretch and skew each individual pixel causing them to blend together and create the illusion of depth. The viewer sees a hologram inside of the lens which shifts and warps based on the visuals played back on the leds which are controlled by a raspberry pi computer.
Event Horizon was displayed in the Telfair Museum in Savannah Georgia from Jan-Aug 2022.
